Skye Hardwick | Work of Heart Photography | Photographer Feature & Giveaway

Today on our Make it Sweet with Prairie Sweet Blog, we have a very well-known (we’re talking celebrity status) photographer, blogger, mentor, designer and mega artist to share with you.   She’s also giving away a fabulous prize to one lucky fan!  (see below)

We are pleased to welcome SKYE HARDWICK of Work of Heart Photography!!  You may have also heard of Skye from her other ventures like:  Reverie , Sweetlight Collective Workshop, etc.!

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Skye, Welcome to the Make it Sweet Blog!!  We are incredibly excited that you have agreed to let us interview/feature you!  Thank you!
PRAIRIE SWEET:  Skye, please tell us a little bit about yourself and your business:
SKYE:  I’m Skye, a childhood photographer living in Southern California. My business is Work of Heart Photography and I’ve been in business over nine years focusing on emotive images of children ages four to twelve. I also offer mentoring and teach workshops in the Southern California area to photographers.
PRAIRIE SWEET:  Your work is unique and wonderful!  You can find more information about Skye’s workshops HERE.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  We think we know the answer to this – but what is your favorite thing to shoot?

SKYE:  Just kids. I’ve tinkered around with shooting other subjects such as bridals and seniors, but photographing kids is where my heart lies.
PRAIRIE SWEET:  And what do you shoot for fun?
SKYE:  Hands down, styled shoots. They’ve become very popular the past few years and I’m thrilled. If I look through my work over the years I can see how I’ve always enjoyed having somewhat of a theme in my shoots, but I love the creative freedom a styled shoot can bring. From sorting out my initial ideas to figuring out props, location, wardrobe … I love watching all the details come together and a story emerge.
PRAIRIE SWEET:  We love your styled shoots!  You can definitely see your heart, your artistry and attention to detail shining through your images.
PRAIRIE SWEET:  What is the BEST thing you’ve done for your business?
SKYE:  When I realized that I did not have to be the photographer for everyone. And that was okay. Just inquiring about a session does not make someone a client. I want to make sure we are a good fit, that we are both seeking the same end results. That they know what I am about and what I offer as a photographer. My first year of business I spent far too long with the feeling I was only hired for my camera, and not my vision. Being hired for your camera only takes a toll on a photographer’s heart which directly impacts their creativity.
PRAIRIE SWEET:  That is HUGE!  So many photographers are anxious to photograph every genre and never turn down a client.  Finding a specialty – that you love – is a great piece of advice.
PRAIRIE SWEET:  Please tell us a bit about a session you’ll never forget:
SKYE:  One session I will never forget is the time I was photographing a toddler near a pond and the mom kept on insisting he get closer and closer (despite my warning that he was close enough). Sure enough, he took a tumble into the pond head first. He was a trooper and didn’t seem to mind, however, he was covered in mud. Thankfully, my home was less than a mile from the shooting location so they stopped by to give him a quick bath.
PRAIRIE SWEET:  Oh NO!!  Now I’m curious how everything turned out after that – did you have to reshoot?  Did the mom realize her mistake?  Thankfully the boy was ok. :)
PRAIRIE SWEET:  We love to get business advice from successful photographers.  Would you please share with us your top 3 tips for how to BOOST YOUR SALES/business:
SKYE: – A tip that I know has helped many photographers make more money from each session: watermark your images. If you do online proofing, always, always watermark the images. Otherwise, people will print them from home and your sales will go down. After all, most people want the right to look at the image anytime they wish — even if it is a web-sized images blown up to an 8×10. and when I say watermark, I mean part of it must be touching an important part of the image. None of those cute little logos in the corner that can easily be cropped. Protect your work and watermark.
- Don’t give away the farm. If you know clients want digital files, sell them, but on your terms.
- Charge what you are worth. You are going to have to do the numbers and find out what it costs for you to run a business. From that point, you can look at profit. If you know you need to make x-amount at each session to make a profit (and thus support yourself and/or your family) you may find yourself un-willing to cave when a client puts pressure on you give them a price break.
PRAIRIE SWEET:  Your tip about watermarking your images really stands out.  So many photographers fail to do this because they don’t want to cover up the picture, etc.  This is a case where the business-mind needs to trump the emotional side.
PRAIRIE SWEET:   We also love to share tips on really giving clients a great experience!  Will you please share with us your top 3 tips for how to PAMPER YOUR CLIENTS:
SKYE: – I always enjoy delivering the images to a client’s home. If I had a studio location, perhaps I would feel differently, but there is something about arriving to their home (where the images will be hung up) with beautifully packaged prints and products. For them, it is like Christmas watching them open up each item.
- Beautiful packaging goes a long way and leaves a great impression on a client.
- Well designed information packet. Whether a photographer decides to print out their info packet or have one online, I have found clients love to have the details about their upcoming shoot (what to expect, what to wear, etc.) and especially what is to be expected after the shoot is over (ordering protocol, canvas display ideas, etc.) and if the packet is designed well, yet another opportunity to wow your client.
PRAIRIE SWEET:  Great tips!  Guiding your client through the entire process with a well designed information packet is key.  Prairie Sweet is working to offer more of these types of tools in 2014.
PRAIRIE SWEET:  We’d love to know – What is your next photography/business goal?
SKYE:  Just continue into the commercial photography world, as well as do more editorial pieces. Living in southern California is the perfect location for many opportunities, although you could do both living just about anywhere. Also, now that I’ve moved to a property with a horse ranch, I hope to be able to offer photographer mentoring out of my own home. Should be fun!
PRAIRIE SWEET:  Can’t wait to see more from your horse ranch!  That sounds so great!  Best wishes to you and your many business ventures in the years to come!

WHCC Vendor Feature & Giveaway! | Photo Lab

Welcome to Prairie Sweet Boutique’s MAKE IT SWEET Blog!

We are definitely going to be making it SWEET today – with a very exciting Vendor Feature with one, if not the, biggest professional photo labs in the industry.

We are thrilled to visit with Mike Hanline of WHCC!!

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Welcome!  Mike – Thank you SO MUCH for being a part of our Make it Sweet Blog today!  Let’s start by having you tell us a little about yourself and your business:

WHCC: Oh my, there is a lot of history to WHCC. My parents owned a portrait studio in the late 40’s and 50’s and ended up selling it and opening a lab in Kansas City in 1956, which is where I grew up. My wife and I migrated north to Minneapolis in the mid 90’s after selling the lab and ended up forming a partnership in WHCC in 1996. The original partner was bought out several years ago and now our sons; Chris and Tim are partners in WHCC.

WHCC occupied a 4,000 square foot building until 2004, when we made our first move to a new 11,000 square foot lab. Now WHCC occupies three buildings in Eagan, Minnesota, one in Mesquite, Texas, and one in Fresno, California, totaling nearly 200,000 sq ft, employing just under 300 people year round and 500+ during the holiday production season.

WHCC was the first 100% completely digital professional lab, probably worldwide, in early 2002 when we processed our last rolls of film. We truly led the digital transition in our industry and remain proud of that still today.

Much has changed over those early years when all we produced was digital photo prints! All product lines continue to sell well and remain popular year after year. We pride ourselves on continuing to develop new products and enhancements to all current products on a continuous basis. We work hard to incorporate new product ideas from a variety of sources, with WHCC clients being the best source of course.

The team that is WHCC has been built over the years includes skilled, motivated individuals that care about our clients and their success. We’ve worked very hard to build a culture that revolves around the success of our clients as the basis for our success. That is what drives us and to be a part of that culture deserves and demands the right kind of individual. I couldn’t be more proud of our staff and how we conduct our business and the principles on which we make our daily decisions.

PRAIRIE SWEET: Wow!  What a great history – so nice to hear about – especially your ties to the Kansas City area.  So besides running an awesome business, what do you do for fun?

WHCC: Aside from having a great deal of fun at WHCC, my wife Diana and I enjoy traveling, much of it for work, but more and more simply to see the world. We’ve been fortunate to travel in Europe the last few years, take a trip to Japan, another to Singapore and look forward to more over the next few years. I’ve also been a life long golfer and car enthusiast, while Diana enjoys interior design and spending as much time as possible with our kids.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Thanks for letting us get to know you better on a personal level.  Next Question:  What is the BEST thing you’ve ever done for your business?

WHCC: Spend time in the market listening to photographers and clients thus staying abreast of the most current market trends. That information drives what we do and where we are going. The real “secret” is transforming that information into a viable, value proposition for your clients. That drives long-term success through building relationships that endure.

We are in our second year of conducting our own “Spend an Evening with WHCC” tour. In 2012 we had over 5000 clients visit us at our traveling open houses where all of our products are on display and our Customer Service staff is there is help you. This has been a great experience for both our clients and us and has added many, many new product ideas to our list. In essence, we bring our convention booth to you, with a little food and cheer on the side.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  GREAT ADVICE – and possibly the ONLY way to stay successful as a business in an ever-changing industry.  We love the “Spend an Evening with WHCC.  I was able to attend the one in Kansas City last year – great food, a chance to look at your products and even meet some of your team.  I have fun meeting Lacey in Marketing there.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Sticking with the topic of business, please share with us your TOP TIPS for how to BOOST YOUR SALES/BUSINESS:

WHCC: In my opinion you will build your business through creating and maintaining relationships with clients who come back to you over and over again through the years. Treating them with respect and integrity will serve you well. Leave them feeling great about their experience with you each and every time you come in contact with them. There are many, many options out there in the market, if you don’t value the relationship properly, your clients will end up somewhere else.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Once again – great advice.  I think this is something we can quickly forget or put aside as we get distracted by other things.  A great reminder to make this a priority.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Speaking of maintaining client relationships, please share with us your TOP TIPS for how to PAMPER YOUR CLIENTS:

WHCC:  First and foremost, make your clients feel special. This isn’t hard – just give them your full and undivided attention.

Second, make it very easy for them to conduct their business with you. The vast majority of them want you to guide them and help them with their buying decisions.

Lastly, give your best clients a gift from time to time – reward them and show them they are special to you. We have many small products that serve that purpose, but the most important aspect is to just say “thanks”.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Love it – give them your full and undivided attention and be there guide through the process!

PRAIRIE SWEET:  We’ve enjoyed hearing your business savvy responses.  We’d love to know what’s in store for WHCC.  Please tell us – What is your next business related goal?

WHCC: Just keep your eye out for our emails. For example we are just launching a new Album product, “premium lustre paper” that will get significant attention during the remainder of 2013. It’s all about bringing the best to the market and providing a successful product to showcase our client’s images to serve their clients. It’s a winning equation all around.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Can’t wait!!  Thank you SO much for being part of our blog today.  We love the business-minded tips from someone who definitely knows how to run a successful business!  Best Wishes to WHCC and the WHCC family!

Now, it’s time for the REVIEW portion of this post.

Today we will be reviewing:

  • WHCC 5×7 Flat Press Printed Cards (5 paper types)
  • WHCC Wallet and 3×3 Mini Accordion Books
  • WHCC 10×10 10 spread Press Printed Album with Custom Photo Cover

But First – an overview of WHCC.  WHCC as you’ve read in the above interview portion of this feature has a long history of serving the needs of professional photographers.  They are professional in their own right and continue to lead the industry with innovation, high quality products and great customer service.

ORDERING:  WHCC has a great website with everything you’ll need to place an order including templates, FAQs and detailed info about each of their products.  They have all of the products in demand for professional photographers and continue to add new products as they see fit.  Shipping is free with every order (minimum of $12) and your package often comes with a little treat.

PACKAGING:   All of the products we ordered were package very carefully and covered in plastic and adhered to cardboard when necessary.

OTHER:  When looking at WHCC’s website I was impressed with their philanthropic efforts and was even introduced to some charities that I was not aware of.  They also take the initiative to be “green” and responsible with their production and the products they use to make sure they are being friendly to the environment.  Way to go WHCC!

PRICING:  WHCC, while one of THE biggest professional photo labs, continues to have very competitive pricing for their products while still maintaining the highest quality.

Now on to the PRODUCTS:

First up are WHCC’s Press Printed 5×7 Flat Cards.

We chose 5 different paper types (although WHCC has a huge selection of paper options) to review.  We’ve ordered press printed cards from several companies.  One thing that impresses us with WHCC is their selection of premium papers.  You can get your own free set of paper samples from WHCC (when you open an account) so that you can touch and feel them for yourself.  However, we’ll do our best to describe them and have some photographs that may help as well.   The price of the cards includes envelopes which you can get in white or parchment.

A note to photographers:  Press Printed cards are the way to go.  If you are still offering photo cards/photographic print cards – consider bumping up the quality of your product line by offering press printed cards.  The quality is so much better – plus you have so many more options in terms of paper choices and get a 2-sided card.  From our experience, 5×7 flat cards (which are 2-sided) are the most popular but there are also more options like folded, tri-folded, boutique shapes and so forth.

CARD STOCK:  One of the biggest positives for WHCC is the quality and thickness of their press printed cards.  No one (well at least I can’t think of one) wants to deliver a thin flimsy set of cards to their clients.  From their standard smooth cards to their premium matte and watercolor papers – every paper has a nice weight.  I’ve been disappointed before with other labs with thin card stock – you won’t have that problem here.

COLOR: The colors were right on with what we were expecting.  If you have a callibrated to WHCC you will have no problems (we didn’t take the extra time for this – and had no problems – but be sure to get your free test proofs done to see how your monitor works with WHCC’s coloring.  There is also lot of guidance on their website for how to get your colors to match properly with theirs).

Above is a sample of WHCC’s 5×7 Flat Press Printed Card (come 2-sided) in Premium Matte Paper.  Here we used our Prairie Sweet Sunshine Card you can get HERE.  These cards have a smoothe matte finish.  We like these cards a lot for a standard everyday type of card.

Above is a sample of WHCC’s 5×7 Flat Press Printed Card in Pearl Paper using Prairie Sweet Boutique’s Evelyn Senior Card Template you can get HERE.  Pearl paper is in it’s own league in terms of its characteristics.  It’s a nice weight card stock with a shimmer to it.  We know lots of photogs who love this paper for their High School Senior Girl clients or even for holiday cards.  It definitely has a unique factor.

Above is a sample of WHCC’s 5×7 Flat Press Printed Card in Bamboo Paper using Prairie Sweet Boutique’s Christmas Whimsy Card Template you can get HERE.  I have to tell you – I’d never tried the Bamboo Paper before and I think I’m in love with it — well, as much as you can be in love with a paper.  It’s a thick, matte card with a subtle texture to it and a natural feel if you will.  I really like the way it feels in my hands and how the colors look so vibrant on it.

Above is a sample of WHCC’s 5×7 Flat Press Printed Card in Semi-Gloss Paper using Prairie Sweet’s Vintage Bold Card Template.  This card is probably the thinnest of the group but still has a nice weight to it.  It is also the glossiest of the papers were are reviewing.  If you like a little bit of glossy (it’s not super glossy – just semi;)), bright colors – this is a good choice for you.

Above is a sample of WHCC’s 5×7 Flat Press Printed Card on Watercolor Paper using Prairie Sweet Boutique’s Soft Linen Card Template you can get HERE.  If the Bamboo paper is my personal favorite (I tend to go for the natural, classic look), then the watercolor paper has to be a close second.  This paper is has a nice matte feel to it with a subtle texture to it.  It isn’t quite a thick as the bamboo paper but is still a nice weight.  We love how it goes so well with our Soft Linen Baby Collection Templates.

OVERVIEW of CARDS:  WHCC really does a great job with their Press Printed Card Line – lots of options, good quality card stock and great color matching.

NEXT UP:  Mini Accordion Books!

We LOVE mini accordion books and sell several templates for them.  They just make the greatest little gifts or add-on items for your clients.  You can put so many pictures in them and included beautiful colors and designs for a really nice product.  They are also have a great price point and come in sets of 3.  Many photogs sell them in sets of 2 and keep the third as a sample.  If you haven’t incorporated mini accordion books/albums in your products offerings yet – we strongly suggest you try them out and get a sample for your studio.

WHCC offers 2 sizes of accordion books:  Wallet (your standard 2.5×3.5 size) and Square (3×3).  They offer custom photo covers or a variety of bookcloth, leather, suede, mineral, etc. cover options.  One of the coolest things about these mini accordion books/albums is that they have a magnetic closure.  This is great for several reasons.  1.  The books stays closed.  We’ve all seen books that will never lie flat again – never the case with these.  Also, since they are magnetic – they will stick to each other OR they’ll stick to magnetic services!  Put them on your fridge, file cabinet at work, etc. and then pull them out when you’d like to share your pics.

Note for photographers – sell up the point that these come in sets of three (of the same design) by telling your customers they can keep one for themselves and then give one to each parent or set of grandparents – perfect!

Above is a sample of WHCC’s Wallet Accordion Mini Book using Bamboo Paper and a Sapphire Mineral Cover (love the mineral covers – so durable and cool!) using Prairie Sweet Boutique’s Mallory Mini Accordion Album Template.   Again, love the bamboo paper on this one and of course the sapphire mineral cover is cool too.

A few more details.

Above is a sample of WHCC’s 3×3 Square Accordion Mini Books with Standard UV Paper and UV Coating using Prairie Sweet Boutique’s Little Honey 3×3 Accordion Album Template.  The UV Paper with UV Coating provides a high gloss product that would be resistant to permanent fingerprints, smudges, etc.  The paper and coating also makes the colors seem even brighter.   As you can see on this sample, we’ve used the custom cover option which allows for more design and pictures – a different look.

A few more details.

LAST but not least – WHCC’s 10×10 Press Printed Album:

Albums are a great way to take your business from smaller orders selling only 5x7s and 8x10s to larger orders giving your clients keepsake products they’ll treasure for always.  Albums are especially popular for the High School Senior and Newborn/Baby Markets.

WHCC has lots and lots of album options and sizes.  Like the mini accordion books, the Press Printed Albums have many cover options including leather, book cloth, mineral, suede, etc. to custom photo covers, metallic covers, padded covers or a combination thereof.

For this sample, we chose a 10×10 (popular size) Press Printed Album with a Custom Photo Non-Padded Cover with 10 spreads (20 pages).  We chose a satin lustre finish on the pages.

Above is a sample of WHCC’s 10×10 Press Printed Album with Satin Lustre Coated Paper, a Custom Photo Cover and Non-Padded Cover using Prairie Sweet Boutique’s Anna 10×10 Album Template which was modified a little (color changes which any owner of the template can make) to fit the pictures from this session better.   WHCC has a very nice product here.  The album is sturdy and has a nice feel to it.  The colors are good too.

Here are a few more details showing the way the lies and the thickness of the pages.  Album pages need to be thick and these are.

A few more details.  {please note that the weird red cast on the picture if probably due to the fact that I was wearing a neon orange athletic shirt and is not what the pages look like;)}

A final shot showing a full page spread.  To get the Anna Album Template we used for this review, click HERE.

OVERVIEW:  Once again, we want to thank WHCC for participating in our Vendor Feature today.  We hope you were able to learn something or be inspired.  Our goal is to help facilitate ways for you to boost your sales and pamper your clients so that you too can have a successful business in the photography industry.

Photographer Feature: The Wild Child | Child Photography | & Giveaway

Welcome to our MAKE IT SWEET w/Prairie Sweet Blog today for our latest PHOTOGRAPHER FEATURE!

We’re so excited to introduce you to The Wild Child Photography!  The unique and magical nature of their photography is inspiring and just plain beautiful to look at.  Check out our interview with these two amazing woman behind The Wild Child and be sure to enter our GIVEAWAY at the bottom of the post.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Welcome to Make it Sweet with Prairie Sweet!  First, please tell us a little about yourselves and your business:
THE WILD CHILD:  We are Kim Bear and Amy Cyphers and together we created The Wild Child. We are a small portrait studio located in Holton, Kansas. We specialize in editorial story art. We are flea market junkies who love vintage props and old books. We started from a small idea born in a coffee house (where all good ideas are made!) Our goals was to create a way to be creative, shoot what we love, and still have time for our families. So we created a monthly themed shoot idea inspired by fairy tales, imagination, and of course our own children (the true Wild Children.) We shoot together, laugh a lot together, and use each other as sounding boards for new ideas.

 photo girl2web.jpg

THE WILD CHILD:  Working as a partnership is exciting and we are both so grateful to have the chance to do this together. One obstacle we had to overcome was merging our workflow. The first thing we did was to create our Watercolor Action set that created the Wild Child look. It makes it so easy now for both of us to edit our individual images and put them together as a collection.

 photo studiocollage.png
PRAIRIE SWEET:  LOVE the area in which you chose to specialize and how you came up with your business.  So tell us, what is your favorite thing to shoot?:
THE WILD CHILD:  Children!!! There is something so special about putting a cape on a child, giving them a doll to hold, or a crown to wear. All of a sudden they are magical. The images we love to create are timeless. We are after natural expressions found when you let a child explore and be themselves.

We offer limited story/editorial sessions for families and seniors. We might do a senior in a coffee house, or her favorite vintage bookstore. Or we might have a family fishing or jumping in puddles. We love to add motion and context to each session.

 photo brittanyhorz-2.jpg
PRAIRIE SWEET:  That’s wonderful!  Now tell us a little more – what do you shoot for fun?:
THE WILD CHILD:  For me (Kim) it is not what I shoot but how I shoot. I LOVE to shoot film. I can’t get enough of it!!! I have a Contax 645 with a zeiss 2.0 lens and I am head over heals in love. When paired with Fuji 400H film it is dreamy. For me (Amy) I am a bit obsessed with my iphone and Intagram. Follow me at amy_cyphers. Composition and light still apply when shooting even with an iphone. For fun I like to shoot nature and of course my children doing the everyday and even the mundane because I realize this time of them being little is very fleeting

 photo filmlittletraveler.png
PRAIRIE SWEET:  The part about how childhood is fleeting choked me up a little and made me think of my own little ones – so true.  Thanks for the inspiration.  Next Question – What’s the BEST thing you’ve ever done for your business?:
THE WILD CHILD:  The best thing we ever did was create a partnership. Hands down. We are able to get more done, be more creative, and use our individual strengths to create a rock’in business.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  That’s so great that your partnership is going so well.   Will you please tell us a little about your most memorable session/client?:
THE WILD CHILD:  We recently were commissioned to shoot the local prom. Which is not really our deal…but was super fun. On top of shooting formal images in front of a HUGE sunken ship background set, we set up a fun photo booth using just a simple black paper, simple props, and a remote trigger! The kids has a blast taking their own pictures. To make it really easy we just popped our speed light right on the camera.

This is an image of us (Kim right and Amy Left) having a great time in the photo booth.

 photo us2.jpg
PRAIRIE SWEET:  Cute!  Love the pictures of you two!  Now, we LOVE to help our readers with their business – Will you please share with us your TOP 3 TIPS for how to BOOST YOUR SALES/BUSINESS?:
THE WILD CHILD: Tip One: Do in person sales! It takes more time but you can make more money while shooting fewer sessions.
Tip two: Hire someone to do your in person sessions! haha. But really… someone who is good at sales as well as has an eye for grouping image into collections can make you a lot of money. They are able to offer suggestion and talk up your work. We think it is best to hire them on commission… the more they sell for you the more they make! win win.
Tip Three: Shoot what you love. We have been overwhelmed by the response from clients and other photographers about our work. We believe they can see how much fun we are having through our images. What we have found is that others want to be around and a part of what we are doing.

 photo littlered.png
 photo littleboyblue.png

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Those are GREAT tips!  The in-person sales one is HUGE.  I’m surprised at how many photogs STILL don’t do them.  Next – Please share with us your TOP 3 TIPS for how to PAMPER YOUR CLIENTS:
THE WILD CHILD:  Tip One: This tip goes back to our sales tip… meet in person. We enjoy meeting with our clients because we can help them through the buying process, which for many is overwhelming. The more support we give to them the more they trust us and appreciate the time and attention they had and feel satisfied with the whole experience and are more likely to return.
Tip Two: Make the children HAPPY. Taking pictures is stressful, especially for moms. So if we can keep it easy for moms, keep it fun for the kids, and offer simple rewards (ok…bribes) we get great images and happy mamas willing to spend money on large wall portraits.
Tip Three: Packaging. One quick thing we do is to mat and cello our gift prints (5x7s and 8x10s). It is a simple thing to do, but give a wow factor. Plus the image is protected if they don’t frame right away or is already to give as a gift.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Again, GREAT tips!  Most clients DO want our advice as a expert advisor.   So tell us – What is your next photography/business/personal related goal?
THE WILD CHILD:  We are creating an interactive photography manual ipad/android publication that you can purchase in the app store. This tool will be used as a stand alone way to learn more about photography as well as a tool used in our Wild Child Photography Workshops. We are beyond excited about what this tool will include and offer. We have also just released our Watercolor Action Set and will start on our next set to be announced soon. As for next steps we plan to get crazy creative and continue to follow our hearts.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  WOW!  An app?  That sounds amazing!  It is evident that you ladies follow your heart.  Your images are magical and inspiring.  I can image any parent with images of their children in this beautiful, whimsical settings would want to blow them up HUGE on their wall to cherish forever.   Thank you SO much for sharing your work and insights with us today on Prairie Sweet.   We look forward to seeing what the future holds – we KNOW you will go far!!

Studio Ainsley | Photographer Feature | Giveaway!

We are so excited for our newest Photographer Feature today with Maca Ferguson of Studio Ainsley!   I met Maca at an exclusive photography retreat a year ago where she was presenting on how to turn your photography business into a successful brick and mortar studio.  I liked her the minute I met her because she is smart, fast-talking and witty, and soooo down-to-earth.   She has so many great things to say about professionalizing your business.   We hope you enjoy this feature!!

We also have a great GIVEAWAY for 2 $50.00 Gift Cards to Prairie Sweet Boutique at the end of this post – be sure to enter!!

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Welcome to our Make it Sweet Blog!  We’re so glad to have you!  Let’s start by having you tell us a little about yourself and your business:

STUDIO AINSLEY: Studio Ainsley is located just southwest of Houston, Texas and began as a home-based portrait studio in August 2006.  I have always specialized in newborn and maternity photography, but I do family portraits on request, especially from clients who have been with me from the start.  Since their children are now five or six years old with younger siblings, I get return clients for family portraits.  The entire venture started out of frustration with not being able to find a newborn portrait studio that had the right balance of quality and affordability.  My husband and I went through three different photographers in my daughter’s first 17 days of life and still walked away with nothing, and I learned valuable lessons as a client and consumer.  For me, it was never a hobby; I built my business in a purposeful way, wanting to own and operate my own company and provide an amazing experience backed up with an awesome product.  Here we are in 2013 where I have a 1,865 square foot studio with three employees.  I have evolved from the cutesy, vintage look with heavy editing into a clean, organic feel.  I like lots of light, airy spaces and use as much natural textures, woods, and fabrics in my images as possible.  That suits my personality and I feel it is more timeless for the client’s investment.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  That must have been such a trying experience with your newborn but also an invaluable learning experience.  Thank you for sharing.  Now tell us…What is your favorite thing to shoot?:

STUDIO AINSLEY:  My absolute hands-down favorite thing to shoot is newborn sessions.  It can be exhausting, messy, daunting work, but it is so rewarding.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Adorable!  We can see the use of natural fibers and materials like you mentioned  – love that!  And I can’t stop looking at the close-up of the precious little baby feet!  So when you have some free time, what do you shoot for fun?:

STUDIO AINSLEY:  The only thing I photograph in my off-time is my kids but my dream is to shoot more landscape.  In my head, I’m the next Ansel Adams! I shoot 3-5 sessions per week (more in the holiday months) so if I do have any “fun” time, I spend it reading or going to the movies.  I rarely take my camera home, and I’m the only photographer I know who does this!

PRAIRIE SWEET:  GORGEOUS.  Could totally see that framed on a wall.  What’s the BEST thing you’ve ever done for your business?

STUDIO AINSLEY:  The best thing I have ever, ever, ever done for my biz is to take it out of my house!  Wow.  Home studios are a major time-suck.  I was in my house for almost three years, and I totally get it.  You work with what you have.  No shame in that game!  But you know those days when you finally get the kids down for bed and sit down to edit at 10:00, promise yourself an hour, then 3:30 AM rolls around and you feel guilty because you still didn’t get every thing done?  Have you ever booked a client sitting in the bathroom with the door locked because that’s your only “quiet” place?  Since I moved into my retail studio, not only did business double, I can focus 100% of my attention on one thing rather than 20% of my attention on five things.  I am more productive and it allows me to compartmentalize my life, so I don’t get overwhelmed.  This allows my business to flourish.  Having a retail spot also lends credibility to what I do because clients see me as a professional.  And in a city the size of Houston, having a brick-and-mortar studio differentiates me from my competition.  Oh, and the second best thing I ever did was decide to take every other Saturday off and I don’t ever work Sundays.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Sooo many photographers can relate to this – you make some GREAT points.   Moving on to even more great stuff, please tell us a little about your most memorable session/client:

STUDIO AINSLEY:  Memorable clients come in all varieties.  I’m not sure if I should mention a good memorable or bad memorable!  One that sticks out is the client who gave me my first order over $3000.  My average at the time was about $800. I learned to never rule out or dismiss a “cheap” client, either.  I have had two clients lose children that I have photographed. One of them could only afford my $250 proof set and it is her most priceless possession.  That was an “a-ha” moment for me.  It’s very inspiring as an artist to know you’ve captured or created something memorable and timeless no matter what a person’s budget is.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  What a great thing to remember.  Sometimes getting caught up in the money part of things sucks the fun out.  We KNOW you have wonderful business advice, Please share with us your TOP 3 TIPS for how to BOOST YOUR SALES/BUSINESS:

STUDIO AINSLEY:  My first tip for boosting sales is to sell in person.  The reason professionals and seminars always tout this is idea is because it works.  My sales almost immediately went from $250 per order to $600 average.  You don’t need an elaborate setup, but it’s important to add a personal element to the buying process.  You wouldn’t buy a car or a diamond ring online without any input whatsoever.  Don’t ask your clients to invest (hopefully) thousands without having a human being to assist them.

The second tip relates to the first and that is to explore hiring a portrait consultant (salesperson).  Salary or compensation will vary by market, and you can come to an agreement that works for the two of you, but in my situation, it is something that I had to delegate if I wanted to book more sessions.  I could only physically handle 20-30 appointments per month, now I can shoot more, which translates to more sales sessions.  It also helps to have a buffer because, for whatever reason, clients will try to get you to flex your policies or negotiate prices with you, the owner.  It’s rare they will ask an employee.

The third thing is two-fold.  Have an amazing website.  We are in a visually based industry and you have to have a site that is pretty to look at and easy to navigate.  When you have that down, work on good SEO (search engine optimization).  My website from CMD has this integrated into the template so that web crawlers see my site.  If you search “Houston newborn photography” in the top engines, I am the first (or second) unsponsored hit.  More hits equal more inquiries, and the more inquiries you have, the more often you will book.  I receive 2-4 inquiries per day and have a 20% booking rate.  On average, that’s 18 bookings per month.  Oh, and respond to inquiries as soon as possible.  If you don’t get in touch with a potential client, another photographer will fill that void.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  WOW!  We know our readers are going to benefit from your words of wisdom.  Thank you so much!  Now, would you also please share with us your TOP TIP for how to PAMPER YOUR CLIENTS:

STUDIO AINSLEY:  I pamper my clients by offering them refreshments in our (in person! again!) consultation.  It’s amazing how many people think the fact that I have a Dr Pepper in my fridge just for them is the coolest thing since peanut butter and jelly.  Of course, I always have snacks and drinks at my newborn sessions for clients who come to the studio.  I also come bearing gifts.  When I go to their home, I bring them a small Edible Arrangement or a thank-you-for-your-hospitality card (on branded stationery) with a Starbucks or Baskin Robbins gift card.  In their completed/packaged order, I almost always include a set of accordion books (my latest fave template is the Mallory from Prairie Sweet) or an easel calendar from Pinhole ProßThose are the bomdiggity!

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Hey – thanks for the shout out! ;)  You’ve really shared some great business tips and beautiful images, etc.  We’d love to know – What is next for STUDIO AINSLEY?

STUDIO AINSLEY:  My husband and I plan to launch a studio consultation firm this year.  We are thankful for the few test subjects who have given us the opportunity to work out details, and so we are that much closer to bringing this dream to realization.  We plan to offer both workshops and private mentorships on how to run a business. There are so many seminars about lighting, posing, and marketing, but not enough on how to turn that information into a living, breathing studio that can grow and evolve into a profitable business where you can balance your checkbook and start paying yourself a wage!

PRAIRIE SWEET:  You are going to be AWESOME with your new business endeavor teaching photographers how to successfully run their business!  We already know one of your first clients personally and KNOW she gained tremendous knowledge from your help!  We’ll be sure to announce when you’re accepting photographers to mentor.   Thanks so much for joining us today and we wish you continued success with Studio Ainsley and everything else you do!!

Tasha Christensen - For the past 10 yrs my husband and I have lived on ‘no credit’ and I have managed to keep a photography business as a steady income for us. In June we plan to purchase our first home. I am thrilled to say – (although its attached to the home) I will be able to have my dream studio. This article gave me hope. To know that Studio Ainsley turned a small business into a thriving one. It made me excited to turn a new chapter on my life to develope my small business into a large and thriving one. I loved the ‘thank you’ for clients idea. The treats you offer – and of course ‘plugging’ the in-person sales. I KNOW I have to do this to turn any type of profit. Thanks so much for the advice – and I have officially become a stocker of your work!

Juanita Kadolph - Thank you so much!! My husbamd and I have been running our in home studio for about 4 years now. We have REALLY REALLY been considering having an actual location for our studio. This has given me a TRUE DREAM that I would LOVE to make possible. With baby #3 on the way it really scares me to know that I am going to be even busier and s t r e c t h e d to my limits! YES!! I KNOW about working 24/7 round the clock aaaand still yet NOT ENOUGH time to complete the tasks for the day yet along ALL WEEK. Mommy…mommy…shhhhh..shhhh…. I am on the phone and running to my closet to talk is not always ideal well really never is! I am just so HAPPY AND EXCITED to start following you and LEARNING from you and how to make our DREAM POSSIBLE. You have given me a glimpse of HOPE and I know with the proper tools this can be possible….in the very near future. I have many many questions but not enough time…..do you do consultaions over the phone? I am so eager to LEARN more. Actually is is pretty neat that you are from Houston Texas as I was born and raised an Houstonian till I got married to my Gernan/Polish cutie. We then moved to Wisconsin where we live now. This will also be our 1st time ever running the business while pregnant…lets see how this journey goes :) …..THANK YOU for your time and so sorry I had to type so much …lol…I am a people person and welllllll LOVED your story wishing you the very best and many PRAYERS…which they have been my strength and pillar thoughout my whole life! Muchas bendiciones!!!!

THANK YOU, AGAIN,
Juanita
