PRAIRIE SWEET:  Hello Laura!  Welcome to our Make it Sweet Blog!  We’re so happy to have you with us today.  To get started, please tell us a little about yourself and your business:

LAURA WINSLOW:  I have had quite the variety of life experiences thus far, the most recent being photography.  I majored in World Politics and Spanish in college, and interned on Capitol Hill and with the U.S. Department of State. I’ve moved 17 times, so travel is in my blood–my goal was to become a Foreign Service Officer with the State Department, but life sometimes takes us on a wonderful unplanned ride. I taught high school Spanish for 7 years prior to becoming a mother. When our son was born very sick, he was unable to be around other children, so I stayed home with him. Around that time, my husband gifted me with my first DSLR and I spent my days practicing on my son, much like countless other photographers. My style of photography–modern, fresh and colorful, is definitely a reflection of who I am. I see the world in color and try to infuse that into my photography.  I very much appreciate black and white imagery, but I instantly see in layers of colors and tones. I photograph primarily children, families, maternity, newborn and senior sessions.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  What a neat and diverse background you have!  Thanks for sharing.  You can definitely see your love of color evident in your images – so cheerful and fun to look at.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  In regards to photography, what is your favorite thing to shoot?:

LAURA WINSLOW:  By far, my passion is photographing children. I love the innocence, the pureness of emotion and playfulness. As a mother, I know how quickly each moment and stage passes. Those little looks, the way they toddle or run everywhere or love stairs or rocks–those are the things that you will want to remember as the years pass.  A close second would be photographing maternity sessions, especially those expecting their first baby.  To capture a woman in this most beautiful of times–perhaps to make her see the beauty she possesses when she doesn’t feel it is a special honor.  I love seeing a woman transform emotionally from expectant first-time mother to new mother at the newborn session. There is something so raw and real about it.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Aww…love that!  It is so true that every stage goes by so quickly.  You do a wonderful job capturing those special moments/stages/expressions.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  What do you shoot for fun?:

LAURA WINSLOW:  Unfortunately, I don’t do enough of this. I find little time left to photograph for fun. To me, sometimes fun is leaving my camera at home and just using my phone!:)When I do have time, I love to capture my children just doing what they do–nothing too formal or planned. I want to have images of our best memories–those of our everyday lives.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  I think most photographers can relate!!  Sooo many iphone photos!  Love that you make time to just catch your children just being themselves.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Please tell us – What’s THE BEST thing you’ve ever done for your business?:

LAURA WINSLOW:  One of the best things I have ever done for my business is to make the decision early on to make custom, upscale packaging as part of my client presentation and experience. It is so important to spend money on packaging, to really put thought into it and to make it an extension of your brand, to spoil your clients with luxury. They are special, make them feel like it. Deliver your images in a way that makes them want to come back again and again–like a little Christmas in a box! There are so many fabulous ways to use templates to customize your client offerings–from Image Boxes, custom cards and accordion albums. Utilize templates to design a beautiful experience for your clientele.

PRAIRIE SWEET!  We couldn’t agree more!   Your packaging is an important extension of your art/branding/personality – don’t disappoint!  Prairie Sweet has many templates that photographers love to incorporate into their packaging and client gifts.  You can check out these templates here – PRAIRIE SWEET BOUTIQUE CLIENT GIFT TEMPLATES

PRAIRIE SWEET:  We’d love to get to know you even more.  Would you tell us a little about your most memorable session/client?:

LAURA WINSLOW:  I like to think that all of my sessions are memorable in some way or another as each family or person has a story or something special about them–I love meeting new people. One of my sessions that sticks out to me, though, is when I had the opportunity to photograph our neighbors, a family of four with two little boys. Their youngest little guy was two and about six months prior he was diagnosed with Batten Disease, a rare genetic disorder. Less than three months after our session, sweet Broxton passed away. To photograph a family knowing that these images meant so much more than just an ordinary family photo shoot was overwhelming. The Taylors are so strong and full of love for one another, and I hope I was able to capture some small part of that for them to always have among their countless memories of little Broxton. (Read more about Broxton and about Batten Disease here : http://bit.ly/yccfuG )

PRAIRIE SWEET:  I hope everyone will take time to read this touching story and tribute to Broxton.  I’m sure they will cherish the gift you gave them forever.  Bless his sweet soul.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Changing gears a little bit.  We love to give our readers ideas to help them improves their SALES.  Would you mind sharing with us your TOP 3 TIPS for how to BOOST YOUR SALES/BUSINESS:

LAURA WINSLOW:

1. Offer your clients beautiful products that further enhance your images and serve as keepsakes.

2. Offer custom touches that they probably cannot do themselves–custom cards, canvas collages.

3. Provide clients with ideas and resources for how they can display their images–get them dreaming of that large gallery wall in their living room before you even present them with their images.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  These are great tips!  Each one could be discussed in great detail.  It’s so important to truly provide a service by guiding them with their choices and providing the products they will treasure.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Along these lines, please share with us your TOP 3 TIPS for how to PAMPER YOUR CLIENTS:

LAURA WINSLOW:

1. Package their orders in a way that makes them absolutely giddy to open it up–beautiful, professional and indulgent.

2. Guide your clients through the wardrobe and styling process prior to your session. Provide them with resources and visuals–make it a less stressful part of the experience.

3. Include an unexpected gift with their order–whether it is a sweet treat, candle, lotion, a custom calendar or accordion albums, be thoughtful of and thankful for them.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Note to all – READ these tips over and over again and implement! – do not underestimate the power of creating a wonderful EXPERIENCE for your clients.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  We’d love to know what is in store for Laura Winslow & Laura Winslow Photography!  What is your next photography/business/personal related goal?

LAURA WINSLOW:  I am a dreamer–my mind is forever racing with new ideas and projects, so it is hard to narrow it down and discuss just one goal.  I have been thinking of offering in-person workshops for some time, so I hope to begin offering them in the near future once every little detail is perfectly planned for the most amazing experience.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  We wish you the best in all of your endeavors.  We’re sure your workshops will be well-received!  THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing your insights and images with us today!
